Brownies and Books with Someone Grand!

Red Ribbon Week Begins with Ghostbusters!

On Monday, JCB students and staff began our Red Ribbon Week with a sea of red and an exciting assembly. Two Ghostbusters came to visit our school to talk to our students about making good choices. They also discussed the importance of being safe this Halloween. They reminded students to go out with adults, make sure their costumes didn't get in the way of their vision, and to have an adult check their candy before they eat any of it. The Ghostbusters also reminded students that to have a happy and healthy future, they needed to make good choices as a student. The students were excited to see them and sang the theme song as they entered the gym giving high five's to our students and staff. Check out some of our pictures below.

Parent Teacher Conferences--Scheduling Window Now Open

Fall 2015 Parent-Teacher Conference Scheduling Now Available

This year Fall Parent-Teacher Conferences will be held on Thursday, November 5, 2015 from 12:40 PM - 8:00 PM and Friday, November 6, 2015 from 8:00 AM to 3:20 PM . Parents will have the opportunity to sign-up for 10-20 minute conferences with either individual teachers, or teams of teachers (based on your child's school). We have created two tutorials, linked below, to assist parents in scheduling their conferences. If you need further assistance, please contact your child's school office or the Instructional Technology Help Desk by emailing helpdesk@johnsburg12.org

Veteran's Day Concert

James C. Bush Elementary School

Third Grade Presents:

We Honor the Brave

                                                      A Veteran’s Day Celebration

Dear Parents and Students,

The concert is just around the corner!  Here are some of the important details:

Wednesday, November 11th
Johnsburg High School Auditorium, 7:00 p.m.
Arrival time for students is 6:45 p.m.
(Students with speaking parts need to arrive at 6:35 p.m.)

Attendance:  The students have been working very hard getting ready for the upcoming performance.  It is very important that students attend the concert.  Since we are working together as classes for this concert, we have been discussing how teamwork is related to music.  In order for us to do the best we can, everyone needs to be there to help!

Arrivals:  Students need to report to their class section in the auditorium at 6:45 p.m. for attendance.

IF YOU ARRIVE EARLY:  Students may either stay with their parents or
sit in their class section until 6:45 p.m.

*PLEASE DO NOT HAVE STUDENTS ON STAGE DUE TO KEEPING THE PROPS AND MUSIC EQUIPMENT NEEDED FOR THIS SHOW SAFE.*

Students with speaking parts will need to arrive at 6:35 p.m. to check-in with Mrs. Mrazek in the auditorium. This is to make sure all of the students with parts are present (in case a student is ill, we will need to have that part covered by someone else).

What to Wear:  Students may wear red, white, and blue for this concert.  An example of nice clothes for boys might be either black pants or khakis with a shirt, dresses or skirts for girls (unless they would rather wear pants), or even a nice pair of blue jeans with a nice shirt will be fine for either.

Videotaping:  There will not be a DVD made for this concert, so please plan accordingly.

Ice Cream After the Concert:  The Johnsburg PTO will be selling ice cream sponsored by Dairy Queen in the high school cafeteria after the concert.  Please be sure to bring cash if you are planning to buy any.  Each ice cream treat will cost $2.00.  Treats will include Dilly Bars, StarKiss Bars, DQ Ice Cream Sandwiches, and Buster Bars.

Rehearsal During the Day/Assembly:  We will be having a rehearsal at the high school the day BEFORE the concert.  This is to go over where the students will sit, how to walk in, and practice the songs to get used to being in the auditorium.   For this, we will need to ride buses to the high school and back.  The students will be gone for the practice from 9:00-10:30 in the morning.

Also, we will be having an all school assembly from 2:15-2:45pm on Wednesday, November 11 (the day of the concert) for the third grade students to sing for the fourth and fifth grade.  This will be more of a practice assembly for the third grade classes.

**If you are a parent or know someone who cannot make it to the concert at night, you may come for this school assembly.  However, there is limited room and we encourage family and friends to see the evening concert.**

If you have any questions, you can contact me at (815) 385-3731 or by e-mail: lmrazek@johnsburg12.org

See you at the concert!

Today in 5th Grade Science

Today in Mrs. Barger-Ancog's classroom, the kids had fun studying the cardiovascular system further by working on a heart rate lab. We found our pulse (despite a few suggesting that they don't have one), then compared our resting heart rate to our active heart rate.

Here are a few pictures of students where the kids are running in place "with super-hero speed" and then taking their heart rates.

Red Ribbon Week is Almost Here!

Red Ribbon Week will be celebrated October 26-October 30. At James C. Bush Elementary School, we will be celebrating with the themes listed below. Please encourage and assist your children in participating. Students will be given a drug free pledge to sign, which will be sent home with your child. It's Apple Crunch Day!

On and around Food Day 2015, millions of people around the country will crunch into an apple in a unifying action to raise awareness about eating better diets for our health and the environment, access and affordability of fruits and vegetables, and supporting local farmers. Hundreds of thousands of school students will crunch into an apple at lunch time, joined by Americans at public Food Day events, in corporate cafeterias, and at home.

The Apple Crunch originated in New York City in 2012, with approximately 400,000 New Yorkers biting into a locally grown New York State apple at the same time on Food Day. In 2013, the Big Apple Crunch in New York City set a world record with 1,000,000 people participating. The activity has spread across the country, and thousands of locations had Apple Crunches for Food Day 2014. Join us for the Food Day 2015 Apple Crunch on October 24, 2015!

James C. Bush Elementary School is proud to be a part of Food Day Apple Crunch 2015. Every student was given delicious apple slices and enjoyed them in their classes.

Dr. Belcastro and two students take a selfie as they eat their apple slices.

What's New at JCB?

Welcome to the Bloodhound Blog! I am excited to begin using this way to communicate with parents, students, friends, and community members about the exciting things going on in our school, district, and community.

It's been a great start to our school year. I can hardly believe that we are almost at the end of the first quarter. Our students are already demonstrating great growth in all areas.

I will be sending out a link to this blog most Fridays with new posts and pictures. But you can check it out any time.

If you have any questions, please email me at bbelcastro@johnsburg12.org.

Have a wonderful day!
